Hillyard Fest 09

Hillyard knows how to rally the troops and get people out for an event. Even amongst the mega construction on Market St and the spotty weather, people came for the parade, food and entertainment. Kiwanis had a strong presence, as did the local politicians. The Hillyard Belles preformed, and many vendors sold their wares.

This was our first time at Hilllyard Fest, and if the festival is any indication of the neighborhood flavor and trends, bikes are big in this part of town. They were featured in the parade. Kiwanis raffled 2 kids bikes and gave out free helmets. Spokefest put on a bike rodeo for the kiddos and organized a community bike ride. We were there to tune up bikes, and between fixes, we caught glimpes of the bike (and skate) tricks at the popular public skate park.

Hillyard is so cool for accepting what others thought a controversial park feature. When the city presented different neighborhoods with hosting a skate park back in 2002, Hillyard was the only neighborhood willing to accept the offer. What a great place for kids and their families. It’s the main feature at Harmon park and is obviously well-loved!
