Drive-Train Maintenance Class

In this course we will cover the mechanical inspection, diagnostics, and repairs pertaining to derailleur shifting systems: front and rear derailleur mechanics, sprocket chain-ring and chain care, crank arm and ring sizing, and rear hub cassettes, freewheels, and cogs.

This is a  hands-on class where you will learn about drive train componetry. The goal of this class is to teach you how to troubleshoot common drive train issues, adjust and fine-tune shifting performance, and generally provide familiarity with the many components that make up your drive train.

Ladies Mechanics Class

Ladies classes are taught by local pro bike mechanic, John Gaz. These classes offer a unique opportunity for women interested in learning about bike mechanics in a comfortable, welcoming environment.

  • LMC Intro 1

If you want to learn about your bike’s mechanics or to talk more confidently and with more knowledge about your bike, then this class is for you! You will work with quick releases, removing front and rear wheels, and removing the tires. Strongly encouraged to take LMC Intro 2.

  • LMC Intro 2

In this class you will learn how to patch a flat, the pros and cons of various flat-repair products, and you will also learn what to carry on your bike to be prepared for roadside repairs. Hands-on instuction on chain maintenance and repair are also included.

  • LMC 3: Stopping

Bike Mechanics 3 covers rim and disc breaking systems. A hands-on lab is included and also breaking theory.
You’ll never feel unsafe about stopping again.

  • LMC 4: Working the Controls

Volunteer/New Member Orientation

To keep our organization running happily and smoothly, we require all volunteers and new members to learn some basic information. In this orientation you will learn tool and shop etiquette, sign in/out procedures, and information on what Pedals2People does in the community. This is a prerequisite to using the shop and participating in volunteer
opportunities. It is on-going and is available on a drop-in basis, just show up when we’re open!

Wheel Building and Repair – 3 day’er

Instructor: John Speare
Facilitator: Glen Copus

This is a 3-part series; about 7 hours of class time. Limited to six students per class. We’ll work from Sheldon Brown’s method of wheel building to build up a strong set of wheels. Learn to lace, true, dish, and tension a wheel set from the ground up. In the first class you’ll build up and finish the front wheel following a step-by-step process with the rest of the class. In the second class, you’ll work on your own to build up the rear wheel while Glen and John provide help as needed. In the final class, we’ll true up old wheels that have bends and wobbles and make them strong and straight again.

For more information about this class, go here.

Cost: $60/series

Wheel Building and Repair - 1 night crash course

Instructor: John Speare

Same principles as the 3-day’er class, but we just build one wheel. If you just want to get some basic experience building up a wheel for the purpose of understanding how to true, tension, and dish a wheel, AND you just want a one-night cheap quickie, this is a good class.

$30/class (Use the “Drive-Train Maintenance” Paypal button)

We only teach basic wheel building. In our class you can build a radial laced, 2x, or 3x wheel. You must supply your own wheel components for both classes. If you do not want to keep a wheel set, then Pedals2People can supply the components for you to build.

P2P can help you get parts, but it’s your responsibility to make sure you have all the right parts before class. It’s a good idea to begin ordering parts up to a month before the class starts. If you order spokes from us, we must have the hub in hand to do spoke calculations.

Pedals2People also has used hubs and NOS hubs that you can purchase, though it’s not recommended that you build your first wheel on a used rim.

Both wheelbuilding classes include 5 hours of shop time credit that you can use after you take the class. This allows you to use the wheel building tools and to practice your new skills. Practice makes perfect!

Wheel building classes are not scheduled regularly. We must have 5 people minimum per class. If you are interested, let us know and we’ll schedule interested people into a class.
