Neighborwoods

This Saturday, morrow to morrow, come by the shop at 4pm to help haul by bike some fresh saplings to the new public market on second. There will be a tree planting party and festivities to follow!

May is the month to say month a lot.

Dear Spokane,

May is a month, about one twelfth of a year, and this month is bike to work month, or really just bike month. A month for cycling more, a month for being car poor. Ok, I will quit trying to say month. But, this month we in the alternative transportation community, specifically cycling I suppose, are looking for ways to inspire a collective interest and practical push towards getting people to try out riding their bikes. Maybe to work, maybe to school, maybe nowhere in particular. Must there be reasons? Maybe. MAY-be.

How to do this? Scratch head… place befuddled look on face… give up and play with silly putty.

Nope, except for the putty part. Wait, what is it made of anyway? Nevermind. Bike to Work Week Spokane, now Spokane Bikes, is May 16th through the 20th, or the 15th- 21st, may the standard work week be dammed like the rivers! and the awesome people of that org. are kicking things off early on the morning of the 16th with a pancake breakfast downtown by the runners in Riverfront Park,  @ ~ 6am! This is a great example of just one way to inspire cycling, FOOD! Speaking of, P2P will be there to keep your bike safe, and, will be gearing an energizer station, a booth with food and water, on Wednesday the 18th at the corner of 25th and High Drive that week too. Roll by either and be greeted with nourishment and smiles on your way to where-ever.

Another non-congressional aid could be that in the form of buddies, friends, and fellowship. The super sweet Eileen Hyatt has put together the Spokane Bike Buddy Program in coordination with the Spokane Bicycle Club. That is where people can partner up and find new routes around town, or just have a companion to show you the ropes of commuting. So if you want a personal guide, or just want to help out some other riders, contact the program via email:  SpokaneBikeBuddy@aol.com, and see how to get started.

In this funky day and age it’s hard to deny the presence of economics in so many facets of life. Perhaps it is not on the tip of your tongue, or is what catches your ideological eye, but the symptoms show up often enough for us to desire having a couple of remedies on hand; perhaps not as many as we would like, but they are around. So, in communion with the neo-classical spirit that has become so prevalent, and in commemoration of bike to work month/week/day/life we at pedals 2 people want to help out. Yep, that means there will be a sale, a discount, a special, an inspiration to buy!  I’m thinking 20% off all our recycled gear? Yeah, that is a good idea! Thanks Board of Directors, you know who you are you rad people you. So come down to our space, 1802 e sprague, on the 12th, 13th, 14th, or 15th so that John The Generous and I can give you stuff! Who knows, there may be a bike or two that we just, I don’t know, GIVE AWAY.

There are so many ways to get a kick start on cycling, other than kicking a cyclist as they begin to pedal. At the shop we want to create a work space free from any social or educational impasses to maintaining that beautiful two wheeled transportation device, and as free as possible of those pesky economic constrictions too. Hopefully this sale thing helps a little, but I won’t rely on it; money can’t be our inspiration to change. If it were, would it be so different out there? If we are to overcome it’s restrictions, we must leave it’s importance behind, so I say just go ride, or walk. Take a moment back, perhaps rustle up some childishness and see if we can’t find another reason to smile.

Oh! Oh! this is one of those exceptionally pertinent moments for some common turn of phrase… something that pertains to an increase in the number of cyclists, social generosity, and smiles all at once… the more the merrier? right? Yeah! put that at the end of the previous sentence.
