Bike safety class information from City of Spokane Bike/Pedestrian Coordinator Grant Wencel.

Bicycle Traffic Skills 101 – Scholarships Available
“Even after 4,000 miles of bike touring and three years of bike commuting in Washington, D.C. I learned so much in this class I became an instructor” ~ Cindy Green
Bicycling to work, run errands, or for exercise can be safe and enjoyable. The League of American Bicyclists “Smart Cycling – Traffic Skills 101” class gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely, and legally, on streets. Learn principles of riding with traffic, predicting and avoiding motorist errors, bike handling skills, basic bicycle maintenance, and essential gear. The class is taught by certified instructors and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age 15, students age 15 to 17 must have a parent present. Class hours are spent both in the classroom and on street settings to prepare cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. Bring a bike in good condition and a helmet. One class is for women only.
The cost to you for this class is $10, is a non-refundable registration fee. The value of the class is $50. The City of Spokane will provide a $40 scholarship for each participant from the Comprehensive Educational Program grant awarded to help reduce pedestrian and bicyclist collisions.

To reserve your spot visit http://www.virtualroster.com and choose Spokane Bicycle Traffic Skills and select your class dates.

Class dates: May 15 & 21; May 30, June 6 & 13; June 5 & 9, and June 21 & 23.

May is Bike Month!

Saturday May 19th P2P will partner with REI and kickoff Bike to Work Week with a bike drive! We will collect donations of used, unwanted bicycles in good condition for recycling, reuse and reintroduction to the wild.

In exchange for your donation REI has generously agreed to provide a coupon good for 20% off one REI or Novara brand item (some exclusions apply).

Help us spread the bike love:

1. Tell your friends with old bikes to donate. They’ll save some cash and be helping a great cause.

2. Volunteer with us at the drive:
*collect bikes or
*haul them to the shop or
*talk about our mission of connecting a recycled bike with a new friend.

If that’s not your cup of strong coffee, you could also get involved with P2P during Bike to Work Week.

Event #1 – Monday4/21 -6:30 – 8:00AM Kickoff Breakfast @ West End of Riverfront Park. P2P will play host to the valet bike corral.
We need help (obviously):
*setting up,
*checking-in, parking and returning bikes
*cleaning up

Event #2 – Thursday 4/24 – 4:00-6:30 PM Wrap-Up Party @ Steamplant Grill
P2P will host a 2nd valet bike corral.
We need help (the medication isn’t working):
*setting up,
*checking-in, parking and returning bikes
*cleaning up

Hope to see you at one of these events! Email Laurel – pedals2people.vc@gmail.com to sign up or for more information.

Thank you so much all you wonderful, generous folks who volunteered your time and expertise last weekend at the first annual Bike Swap. It was a great event and exceeded everyone’s expectations. Bikes were flying out of there faster than they could be put out, and there were some great deals on used parts and accessories. We got our space for free, sold some bikes, and gave out a lot of information to folks who either didn’t know about us or didn’t know where we’d moved. Next year will be even better! Thank you, thank you, great people!
